What is it?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a common condition affecting the gums and bone that support your teeth. It is caused by a build up of dental plaque and calculus (hardened deposits) along and under the gums.

Studies show that more than half of adults have some form of periodontal disease. Many patients do not realise they have it because early stages are often painless.

If left untreated, gum disease can lead to:

  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums

  • Persistent bad breath

  • Gum recession

  • Loose teeth

  • Tooth loss in advanced stages

How is Gum Disease treated?

Early detection is key. The earlier gum disease is treated, the better the long-term outcome. Most cases are first identified during your routine dental check-ups.

At Tanglin Dental, most cases of gum disease are treated by our general dentists, while more advanced or complex conditions are managed by our experienced team of specialist periodontists.

Treatment generally involves:

Deep Cleaning (Scaling & Root Planing)

  • Cleaning deep under the gums to remove plaque and hardened tartar

  • Creating a clean root surface so the gums can reattach and heal

  • Using local anaesthetic to ensure the procedure is comfortable

Depending on severity, treatment may be done over several visits.

For Advanced Cases, our periodontists may recommend:

  • 牙龈手术

  • Regenerative procedures to restore lost gum or bone

  • Supportive maintenance every 3 months to keep the condition stable
